Andy Robertson has praised Jordan Henderson for his assist for Liverpool against Ajax last night.
The Reds captain set up Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s opening goal with a delightful outside-of-the-boot ball. And speaking to BT Sport after the game, Robertson assessed the 3-0 win.
“We knew they had to win. We knew what the circumstances were in the game, and they’ve tried to start fast. I don’t think we calmed down quick enough, losing too many balls and things like that,” said the 28-year-old.
“The important thing was we didn’t concede, we stayed in the game. I think they had one big chance, but apart from that we managed to keep it tight. Then it was just about getting the first goal, winning the second balls and Hendo’s done unbelievable to pick out Mo.
“I think after that goal we really settled down and started playing our own football and then in the second half we really came into our own and obviously got a massive three points. It’s always nice to get through before the last game.”
Henderson provides game-changing pass
Henderson’s pass to set up Salah was probably the defining moment of last night’s game.
Liverpool had seemingly weathered the early Ajax storm, but the Dutch side would still have been hopeful at 0-0.
But with just minutes to go until half-time, Henderson produced a bit of magic. Winning a header in the Ajax half, the Reds captain turned, before picking out his teammate with a glorious ‘trivela’ pass.
It’s the kind of outside-of-the-boot pass that Salah himself has become well-known for.
Perhaps Henderson has learnt a thing or two from the Egyptian in training, because this was perfect.
After that, Liverpool took control of the game. Darwin Nunez should have scored before he eventually did early into the second-half. A third was soon added by Harvey Elliott, as Liverpool kicked their hosts while they were down.
It wasn’t a flawless showing by any means. But after the damaging defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, it was a very good response from Liverpool.
