‘I can’t fathom it’: Pundit can’t wrap his head around a ‘massive concern’ at Liverpool right now

John Aldridge can’t wrap his head around Liverpool’s Premier League away form. The Reds are struggling beyond belief.

Liverpool struggled again on Saturday, losing 1-0 away at Nottingham Forest. Even with that victory, Steve Cooper’s side remain bottom of the Premier League at the end of the match week.

In other words, it wasn’t a good result. It wasn’t necessarily a complete shock, however, as Liverpool just can’t win away from home in the Premier League. Literally.

They’ve picked up just a couple of points from their five away games – a horrendous record for a side with title aspirations. It’s the kind of form that Liverpool legend John Aldridge just can’t wrap his head around.

“Liverpool’s away form and not winning an away match in the Premier League is massively concerning,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “You’re never going to be anywhere in the league, top four, unless you start winning away from home.

“For whatever reason, I don’t know and I can’t fathom it out. The away matches in the league that we’ve played we should have won, but we haven’t and we’ve come away with nothing.

“And then it can become a bit of a mental block, that’s why I’ve said we need to get past this next month. Get to the World Cup and get that going, and then start again.”

It’s an enormous concern but mainly, it highlights the true problems at Liverpool this season. Because of course they’d struggle away from home – controlling games is their big struggle.

The Reds can’t dictate games and as we saw against Forest, teams essentially choose their gameplan and enact it against Liverpool. Cooper wanted his team to sit compact and then attack on the break. And so they did. Simple as that.

Liverpool at their best find ways to stop this. Perhaps it’s by stretching sides, maybe by defeating the counter-attack – either way, they’re the ones dictating the games.

At home, it’s a little easier to have that control and Liverpool find more points. Away, though, the problem shows itself every time. Until Jurgen Klopp finds a way to get that control back, his team will continue to drop points.
