Pundit and former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol laid into Joe Gomez for making mistakes this week. The centre-back is looking inconsistent.

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol doesn’t like what he’s seeing from Joe Gomez this season. The 25-year-old put in another poor performance against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, even earning an earful from Jurgen Klopp.

And while Gomez did play wonderfully against Manchester City, Nicol feels he’s simply making mistakes in every game this season.

“Gomez, lets be honest, has had one incredible game but every game he’s making mistakes,” he told ESPN.

Nicol isn’t the only ex-Red picking on Gomez. Robbie Fowler also didn’t like what he saw in the buildup to Forest’s goal at the weekend.

And this is a theme with Gomez. Yes, he’s capable of playing fantastically well and is a centre-back who played a key part in a title win. His ability – and potential – is incredible and he’s one of the most talented defenders in the country.

But he’s very, very capable of losing his head and making poor decisions. That moment against Forest felt inevitable after he misplaced a few first-half passes. Suddenly, he wasn’t confident playing a pass into midfield and tried to be overly cautious.

It happened against Napoli, too. The Italians caught him out over and over again as he looked to play back to Alisson rather than pass through midfield. It’s an unfortunate trait of his and one that Liverpool need to iron out.

Usually, this would happen by 25 anyway. Gomez is a player who has missed multiple years of his career through injury, however, and his age isn’t necessarily ‘accurate’ in football terms. We’re still confident that he will become a more confident, composed centre-back.

Right now, though, Nicol is right. There are too many mistakes and it’s hurting Liverpool fairly regularly.
