Liverpool U21 coach Barry Lewtas had positive things to say about Calvin Ramsay this week. The 19-year-old is on his way to the first-team.
Calvin Ramsay featured again for Liverpool Under 21s this weekend as he helped the Reds beat their Everton counterparts. They won the game 2-1 in Kirkby, with Ben Doak impressing once again as he scored the winner.
For Ramsay, though, this was another 45 minutes of action as he tries to find fitness. The Scot arrived in the summer from Aberdeen but an injury has kept him out of the picture every since.
Only now is he back on the pitch – albeit only for the Uner 21s. It sounds as though he’s nearing the level Jurgen Klopp will want for first-team action, though, as U21 boss Barry Lewtas praised his efforts at the weekend.
“Calvin was excellent,” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “He scored for us last week against Accrington Stanley and we gave him 45 minutes against Everton.
“He was full of enthusiasm, he defended well and built the attack down the right, supporting Ben Doak well and they were a handful. It was more minutes in the tank and that’s what’s important for him.”
Calvin Ramsay shines at Liverpool U21 level
While James Milner is deputising very well at right-back for the senior side, the squad will be stronger once Ramsay is up to speed. He’s a very impressive young full-back and one who may just push Trent Alexander-Arnold a little.

But to do that, he first needs fitness. 45 minutes for the U21s is a start but there’s still a little ways to go. Honestly, we thought he’d be good to go by now but it seems that Liverpool aren’t taking any risks here.
The EFL Cup tie with Derby County on November 9th seems like a very obvious senior debut, though. That should be a heavily-rotated side and even if it’s just from the bench, Ramsay should get his chance.
