Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looks sharp in a training video as the Liverpool midfielder nears his return. The player hasn’t featured this season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is finally back in training with the Athletic reporting this week that he’s getting increasingly intense with his work. The Liverpool player picked up a serious problem in pre-season, meaning he hasn’t featured competitively this season.

And now we’ve got proof that Oxlade-Chamberlain is well on his way to a return. Liverpool’s Twitter account posted training footage on Thursday that showed the midfielder finishing sharply in an exercise.

It suggests he’s not too far off playing proper games, even if it’ll likely still be a few more weeks before we see him on the pitch. Still, Oxlade-Chamberlain is progressing nicely.

The 29-year-old will want to hurry back into action, too. Liverpool’s new 4-4-2 system seems tailor-made for Oxlade-Chamberlain, with him able to play either of the wide midfield roles.

The fact he’s an experienced centre-midfielder and winger could really help Jurgen Klopp out, in fact. Oxlade-Chamberlain can bring the work-rate and physicality of a midfield player to the flank, while also boasting enough pace to threaten in behind.

And so if Oxlade-Chamberlain can return anytime soon, we may see the best of him. Both Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are out, after all, which frees up opportunities for those wide positions. We fully expect the Englishman to impress there if given the chance.

But when could that come? He’s now running dangerously close to a return right as club football stops for the World Cup. That would be a disaster for Oxlade-Chamberlain, given both Diaz and Jota will return once it’s over.

For his sake, we’ll hope that he’s feeling as sharp as the video suggests. Once he’s back on the pitch, Oxlade-Chamberlain may have the perfect position waiting for him – if he’s quick.
