‘I’d be very surprised’: Michael Owen predicts who’ll finish as Liverpool’s top scorer this season

Michael Owen gave his prediction for Liverpool’s top scorer this season. The Reds suddenly have a few contenders.

Michael Owen believes Mohamed Salah will finish as Liverpool’s top scorer this season, despite a slow start. The Egyptian only has three Premier League goals in 11 games – though, he has boosted his numbers in other competitions.

Salah has nine in all competitions, with five coming in the Champions League and another in the Community Shield. Admittedly, a few of those have come from the penalty spot.

But Owen feels Salah is just far too consistent overall for anyone at Liverpool to outscore him. Not even Darwin Nunez, it seems.

“Well, I think if you ask anybody, any Liverpool fan, to predict who will be Liverpool’s top scorer by the end of the season, I’d be very surprised if many said anyone other than Mo Salah,” Owen told the Mirror.

“He’s just a consistent source of goals, he has been for a few years. You might have been surprised when he first came in and he scored all those goals. But I think it’s long gone when it comes to people thinking that was a flash in the pan.”

Liverpool’s top scorer

Salah is certainly the favourite but we do think it’ll take him moving into the middle for it. The forward just looks so isolated out on the flank and rarely finds himself with any chances.

Centrally, though, Salah is a livewire who looks utterly unstoppable. His six-minute hat-trick against Rangers showed that, as did his winner against Manchester City at the weekend.

Nunez dors look like a contender, though. He’s now scoring fairly regularly and does it while looking completely raw. The 23-year-old should only get better and better as he settles at Liverpool – and could score even more as a result.

So this could end up being a tight race. Salah is the favourite but Liverpool’s new no.27 will likely put up a fight.
