Darwin Nunez is coming along with his English, says Alisson Becker. The Liverpool goalkeeper knows it’s a ‘really difficult’ process.
Darwin Nunez grabbed headlines on Wednesday as his header earned Liverpool three points against West Ham. The Uruguayan met a Kostas Tsimikas cross to divert the ball into the far corner, with the Hammers unable to reply.
And in truth, Nunez could have had more. He cracked one effort off of the post, forced a wonderful save with another, and was just a menace throughout.
Alisson Becker, who also played a massive role with a penalty save, quickly paid tribute to the player after the game. He told Amazon Prime that adapting as Nunez is doing is ‘really difficult’. He’s been there before, of course.
“Well, we are helping him a lot,” said Alisson. “We keep him really close! But he’s a really good lad.
“I know that it’s not easy, it’s really difficult to settle in a different country. When I came here, I knew a little bit more English than him. He’s learning, he’s working hard on that as well – not only on the pitch but with English.
“He’s a really disciplined boy. Disciplined man! Not a boy. I’m getting old.”

It’s something that gets a little lost when talking about Nunez. No, he hasn’t been perfect since his arrival but he’s trying to do something that’s very tough.
He’s still only 23 and has moved to a new a new club, in a new league, in a new country. And he has to try and fit into a fairly establish side without speaking the language.
We should really be impressed that Nunez is providing as much as he is, then. He’s scored a goal every 114 minutes, in fact, and that drops to every 95 minutes if you include his assist on opening day.
Nunez should only improve from here, then, and what we’re seeing is already impressive. Next step: communicating with all of your teammates.
