Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has leapt to his club’s defence after comments from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp’s comments about Newcastle have been under the spotlight this week. The Reds boss had suggested that there was ‘no ceiling’ for the Magpies after their recent takeover.

But speaking on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson said that restrictions were actually making life ‘difficult’ for Newcastle.

“Yeah, the club has been taken over but it’s not going out and splashing money every transfer window, you have to do it in a controlled way,” said the England striker. “There’s financial fair play in place, so really it’s difficult, those clubs [like Liverpool] were spending big before financial fair play came so they have so much injected into their clubs already.”

Wilson did however admit that he doesn’t think players or managers should start getting into club finances.

“To be honest, it’s difficult. It’s hard for me to talk about finances and it’s probably not for me or managers to start getting into,” he said.

When Jurgen speaks, the Premier League listens

Our Jurgen was a real topic of discussion on this week’s Footballer’s Football Podcast. Although Wilson wasn’t quite as sympathetic towards the Liverpool coach as co-host Michail Antonio, of West Ham United.

Nevertheless, it’s clear that whatever Klopp says has a ripple effect through the English game.

Whenever he speaks, people listen. At times, what he says is wilfully twisted into something it isn’t. At others, he is chastised for making very relevant points.

So, Klopp may not necessarily be popular with the rest of the Premier League at times, but he has to be respected.

How brilliant it is to have a manager who commands such interest in his words. Klopp isn’t afraid to speak on difficult matters and that’s just one of the things that makes him so perfect for the Liverpool job.

If he wasn’t the Reds boss, perhaps we would feel the same about him as a lot of rival fans do. But whatever you think of him, Jurgen’s words carry enormous weight.

It will be interesting to see if the 55-year-old continues in football once his time at Anfield has come to an end.

After nine years of having his every word scrutinised by those inside and outside the game, perhaps he’ll have truly had enough. Who could blame him. For now, though, let’s hope he keeps on speaking his mind, it’s always worth listening.
