West Ham’s Declan Rice wasn’t in great spirits after losing to Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday. The Reds squeezed out a win.
Declan Rice was quite distraught after Liverpool beat West Ham United 1-0 at Anfield. Darwin Nunez scored a first-half header that proved decisive and the Uruguayan was unlucky not have at least one more.
A fantastic left-footed volley forced a save, while a later one crashed off the post. It was essentially the Nunez show in that opening 45. Up until a penalty that Joe Gomez gave away, anyway. Jarrod Bowen stepped up but Alisson was equal to it to keep his side ahead.
But Liverpool couldn’t find a second goal and that allowed West Ham back into the game. The Reds became increasingly nervy as time ticked away, inevitably resulting in chances for the visitors.
In fact, it took an incredible block by James Milner in the 87th minute to keep Liverpool in front. David Moyes couldn’t believe that one, dropping to his knees as the ball fired wide.
Coming so close left Rice ‘feeling sick’ after the final whistle.
Declan Rice ‘sick’ after losing to Liverpool
“I feel sick, I honestly feel sick. We know it is tough place to come, you have to show grit, heart and desire,” said Rice, per the BBC. “There was enough in the second half to nick something from the game. We are showing signs we can compete with the big boys.

“To show the courage we did in the second half, dominating the ball and creating chances, I’m proud of everyone. I’m just gutted we couldn’t get something from the game like we should have.”
A little dramatic there from Rice, in truth. Liverpool had plenty of their own chances to win the game and were desperately unlucky on a couple of occasions.
West Ham certainly could have gotten something here, though. We’d argue the Milner block was their only real clear-cut chance, however – other than the late first-half penalty that Alisson was equal to.
We feel Liverpool earned their points here.
