Here’s where all six Liverpool players finished in the Ballon d’Or top 25. The Reds were well represented after a remarkable 2022.
France Football held their annual Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday as Karim Benzema won the top prize. The Frenchman helped Real Madrid to both La Liga and the Champions League, scoring 44 times along the way.
Liverpool were heavily involved in the final list of 25, too. The Reds won two trophies and were runners up in both the Premier League and Champions League, of course. They were remarkably close to winning absolutely everything in the end.
Six current Reds made it into the top 25, with one former player finishing second behind Benzema. Here’s how they ranked.
Liverpool players in the Ballon d’Or top 25
Sadio Mané – 2nd
Okay, so not a current Liverpool player but we’ve got to mention him as his efforts did (mostly) come in a Liverpool shirt. Sadio Mané was spectacular over the second half of last season, playing an enormous role in the Reds’ success.
But his performance in the Africa Cup of Nations as Senegal won their first trophy really made his season. Mané fully deserved second spot.
Mohamed Salah – 5th
Back where he belongs – amongst the world’s best. Thre was a point where it seemed Salah could actually win the Ballon d’Or, of course, but his form post-AFCON hurt his chances.
Still, last year was a phenomenal campaign from Liverpool’s talisman.
Fabinho – 14th
A deserved recognition for one of the world’s best holding midfielders. Liverpool depended heavily on Fabinho last year as he held the team together from the base of midfield.
Virgil van Dijk – 16th
What a return from injury that was, then. Van Dijk missed the bulk of the previous season but returned to play the entire campaign for Liverpool. The difference he made was massive in the Reds’ pursuit of trophies.

Luis Diaz – 17th
Diaz split his campaign between both FC Porto and Liverpool, winning trophies with both. In fact, the Colombian nearly won both the Portuguese and English league titles. A remarkable breakout campaign from Diaz.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – 22nd
Contrary to popular belief, Alexander-Arnold is actually one of the world’s best players. He showed that last season as one of the most creative players around. A fully deserved place on the list from a vital Liverpool player.
Darwin Nunez – 25th
Nunez gets on here as a Liverpool player but as this award was for last season, none of this season’s contributions counts. Instead, he’s there for an incredible Benfica campaign in which he scored 32 goals and earned his big-money move to Anfield.
