Robbie Fowler joked that he ‘wanted Mohamed Salah gone’ in the summer as the Egyptian closes in on his Liverpool record. The Reds’ no.11 will ‘inevitably’ break it.
Mohamed Salah bagged the winner for Liverpool against Manchester City on Sunday and with it came his 121st Premier League goal for the Reds. It moves him past Steven Gerrard into second on the all-time list.
Again, just for the Premier League – not outright league goals for Liverpool. Salah moved into eighth in that regard.
In terms of the Premier League, though, only Robbie Fowler stands above him. Fowler scored 128 across two spells with Liverpool, meaning Salah is seriously closing in on his record. It seems inevitable that he breaks it this season.
So how does Fowler feel about that? He addressed things on Premier League Matchday Live – and joked that he really wanted Salah to leave in the summer.
“I was the only Liverpool fan in the world who wanted him gone in the summer!” said Fowler. “I think it’s inevitable that he’s going to do it and he’s a wonderful player.
“Look I’m happy with my career, happy with my goals. Somebody’s going to break it someday and I’ll just have to live with it.”

If Salah continues to look this dangerous in his central striker role, he’ll have the record before the World Cup. By the end of the season? It would be truly shocking if he wasn’t Liverpool’s outright Premier League top scorer.
He does have a long way to go for the overall league scoring records, however. Roger Hunt leads the way on 244 – so just over double Salah’s tally. Ian Rush then tops the chart for top-flight goals at 229.
Over 100 away, then.
So we can’t see Salah taking those records but the Premier League one should be his by the end of the season. A well-deserved record, too, from one of the greatest we’ve ever seen at Anfield.
