Virgil Van Dijk has reacted to Joe Gomez’s much-improved showing for Liverpool against Rangers last night.
After claiming a lovely assist for Roberto Firmino’s all-important go-ahead goal, Gomez took to Instagram to share some snaps of the win. Commenting on the post, Van Dijk suggested that his Liverpool teammate was on fire at Ibrox.
No words needed from Virgil, just a simple fire emoji says it all.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold side lined for a couple of weeks, Gomez will go again at right-back against Manchester City on Sunday. More of the same please, Joe!
Gomez does his best Trent impression
For much of the first half in Wednesday night, Gomez looked a little lost at right-back. He almost put a goal on a plate for Rangers with a no-look back pass which more or less summed up Liverpool’s opening 45 minutes.
Thankfully, like most of his teammates, the 25-year-old came out stronger after the break.
With Ibrox still bouncing, Gomez was ultimately responsible for the moment which wrestled the game back in Liverpool’s favour.
Yes, it was Roberto Firmino who put the ball in the net, but he owed it all to Liverpool’s No.2. Gomez’s whipped ball across the face of goal couldn’t have been any more perfect.
Watching on, it looks like an easy ball to play. As Liverpool fans we’ve become used to seeing Trent Alexander-Arnold play those kinds of passes with his eyes closed.
But it’s far from easy. The space Gomez had to hit was absolutely tiny and had to evade two Rangers defenders. For a man far more suited to playing at centre-back, it should have been neigh on impossible. Not for Joe, though.
This was Gomez’s first start since a torrid showing in Matchday 1 against Napoli. Although it wasn’t all impeccable, the England international can be much happier with his display last night.
With Kyle Walker and Reece James both sweating on their World Cup fitness, Gomez may have sent a timely reminder to Gareth Southgate that he’s still a versatile option for Qatar.
