‘Like it was my goal!’: Liverpool player ecstatic to see ‘outstanding’ teammate score one particular goal

Fabio Carvalho couldn’t hide his delight at one Liverpool goal vs Rangers last night. He celebrated the strike ‘like it was his’.

Jurgen Klopp took a risk with his Liverpool team against Rangers, leaving both Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota on the bench. Luis Diaz is injured, too, and that meant Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott came in to play the wide positions.

They offered a different way of playing it than we’ve seen over the last week. They’re playmakers rather than wingers, after all, looking to drop deep and cut inside rather than get in behind.

It worked, though. The two of them played very well, with Elliott capping off the night with goal no.7 for Liverpool. It was a strike that left Carvalho delighted.

“Even when the decision went his way for the goal, I was celebrating it like it was my goal!” he told Liverpoolfc.com. “I’m just so happy for him because he had an outstanding game.

“This time I didn’t get a goal but it’s equally as good for him to get the goal.”

Liverpool have something pretty unique in Carvalho and Elliott. The pair came up together in Fulham’s academy and now share a pitch for the Reds. They play largely the same position, too, as we saw at Ibrox.

Klopp can use them on opposite flanks, asking the pair to do similar things. It created an interesting shape last night – not quite as attacking and 4-2-4 as we’ve seen over the last couple of games.

And the two of them have a natural understanding, while there’s certainly no rivalry there. It’s easy for Liverpool to invest their future in Carvalho and Elliott, then. They know each other perfectly, want to share a pitch and are always on the same page.

They should be around at Liverpool for a long time to come.
