Alan Shearer was blown away by Mohamed Salah’s 6-minute Champions League hat-trick for Liverpool last night.
Having watched from the bench as Roberto Firmino stole the limelight at Ibrox, Salah wasn’t about to be shown up. Entering the pitch with 22 minutes left, he quickly went about bagging himself the match ball.
The six minutes and 12 seconds between his three goals is, unsurprisingly, a Champions League record. And like so many watching at home, Shearer was impressed. Taking to Twitter to voice his amazement, all he could muster was a “Wow,” followed by three clapping hands emojis.
Not a bad goalscorer in his hey-day, that’s a hat-trick the former England man would’ve been proud of himself.
Long live the King
This was supposed to be Firmino’s night in Glasgow. Liverpool’s beaming Brazilian was absolutely sensational as he scored an important brace and grabbed an impudent assist for Darwin Nunez.
But Liverpool’s £34m man wasn’t to be denied.
It was a hark back to the Mo of 12 months ago as he looked like scoring every time he got near the goal. As Liverpool have struggled over recent weeks, he’s looked a million miles from the goal threat he so obviously is. That changed on Wednesday night.
And this wasn’t just any old hat-trick, either. There were no penalties or tap-ins to pad the goals. All three had that Salah trademark feel about them.
The first owed to a lovely touch, turn and finish in what seemed like barely any space at all. Trademark Salah.
His second showed off the stop-start dribbling with the ball that so often leaves defenders not knowing whether to stick or twist. Trademark Salah.
But the third… If you painted a Mohamed Salah goal from memory, then this would be it. Drifting in from the right-wing to pick up a through ball from Diogo Jota, Mo opened his body up and curled his effort so sweetly off the inside of the far post.
Now that’s trademark Salah indeed. The King is back. Watch out City.
