Liverpool are weighing up whether to make a bid for Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who claim that the Reds are ‘keeping their eyes’ on the Argentina international.
But a move reportedly won’t be easy to complete. That’s because Betis, or more specifically the Betis fans, are said to be desperate to keep Rodriguez in Seville.
As a result, the reported Liverpool target is claimed to be set for contract talks before next month’s World Cup. The 28-year-old has around 18 months left on his current deal.
Rodriguez on Premier League shopping lists yet again
This isn’t the first time that Guido has been touted as being on the shopping list of Premier League clubs.
Back in the summer, Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reported on Twitter that Everton had ‘set their sights’ on the defensive midfielder.
But despite having reportedly made contact with the player himself, no formal offer arrived to Betis.
Going back a year further, and Arsenal were claimed to be interested in Guido, too. On that occasion it was Marca making the claims, whilst also reporting the presence of a £70m release clause in the player’s contract.
In Liverpool terms, they’ve also previously been linked to Rodriguez. And watching him play, it’s clear that stylistically, he could fit the bill. His all action, combative displays are reminiscent of a certain Fabinho Tavares.
Since 2017, he has earned a not-too-shabby twenty-five caps for Argentina. Rodriguez looks set to be amongst the players aiming to end Lionel Messi’s hunt for a World Cup winners medal this winter.
All of that would support the theory behind Liverpool’s interest in the player. But at twenty-eight, he’s just six months younger than Fabinho.
Too old to replace the Brazilian over time, too expensive to be brought in as his back-up, this one seems unlikely. Still, it might be worth keeping an eye on Rodriguez during next month’s tournament in Qatar.
