Oakley Cannonier is having a lot of fun in the UEFA Youth League this season. He scored again for Liverpool vs Rangers on Wednesday.
Liverpool Under 19s players their reverse tie against Rangers on Wednesday and it was an eventful one. The Reds took the lead but the Gers hit back from the penalty spot.
But Liverpool found two more before half-time to go in at 3-1. However, a red card for Lee Jonas allowed Rangers back into the game and they found a second with half an hour to go.
A wicked bounce off the post then gave Rangers a tap-in for 3-3. A crazy game that just kept giving. It had one more to deliver, too, as Ben Doak dribbled his way from the corner flag to score a sensational winner.
The ultimate story here, though, was Oakley Cannonier – once again.
Oakley Cannonier in the UEFA Youth League
It won’t surprise anyone that Cannonier opened the scoring. Nor that he got the third goal to finish with a half-time brace. The only problem was an injury with that second goal that forced the 18-year-old off.
But these were two impressive goals. The first saw Cannonier end up with the ball after a goalmouth scramble. He span expertly before poking it into the far corner – a move that had Neil Mellor calling him a ‘natural goalscorer’ on commentary.

The second was another ‘goalscorer’s’ goal. Cannonier was sent through by Ben Doak and he toyed with the covering defender, sitting him down before getting a shot in on goal. The keeper saved it but the Liverpool striker was relentless, ending up with three bites at the cherry before scoring.
With that, Cannonier had his 7th goal in just 4 UEFA Youth League games. That run includes one against Napoli, a hat-trick against Ajax, another against Rangers last week and now this brace.
And his scoring doesn’t stop there. Cannonier grabbed two for England U19s and then scored his first Under 21 goals this week. The latter is all the more impressive when you consider he played just 11 minutes.
Liverpool, it seems, have something very special here.
