Liverpool are surprised by Arthur, says Fabrizio Romano. That’s led to a decision on his future at the club as the Reds hold a buy option.
Fabrizio Romano claims that Liverpool have been surprised by Arthur. The Reds brought him in as a last-minute signing from Juventus in the summer – a loan with an option to buy.
“The buy option for Arthur Melo will not be triggered by Liverpool,” Romano told his YouTube channel. “The buy option which is around £37.5m.
“It’s a loan with a buy option, not mandatory in this case. But the main problem with Arthur is the injuries. He’s been having too many injuries.
“In this case, it’s something that is surprising to Liverpool as they signed him on deadline day because they had many injuries in midfield. They decided to go for Arthur to have one more option for Jurgen Klopp and then go for a top midfielder next summer.
“Now Arthur, serious injury, three or four months out and not available to Klopp.”
Liverpool surprised by Arthur
Arthur has always battled injuries and fitness issues, so we’re surprised that Liverpool would be surprised, honestly. In fact, we’d find it hard to believe that they’re surprised if not for the fact they did sign the Brazilian during an injury crisis.
Liverpool must have believed the injuries weren’t an issue. Or at the very least, that they could manage him better than Barcelona and Juventus did. As it turns out, they couldn’t.

Arthur’s efforts in training have supposedly been ‘first class’ over the international break. It’s devastating to see him pick up a problem, then, at a time when he needed to prove himself.
We felt that Arthur had to earn a spot before the World Cup if he were to have a future with Liverpool. That now won’t happen and it’s not a surprise to hear that the club won’t trigger his buy option.
Perhaps he can return in 2023 and truly shock everyone but it feels unlikely. Arthur’s Liverpool career might be over before it started.
