Danny Murphy had praise for Darwin Nunez for his display for Liverpool vs Arsenal on Sunday. The striker was trouble all afternoon.
Liverpool lost 3-2 to Arsenal on Sunday in what was a mixed bag of a performance. On the one hand, they scored twice against the Gunners. On the other, all three goals conceded were their own fault.
Better defending could have won this game comfortably. Yet again, however, the Reds faltered in that regard.
But there was one major positive. Darwin Nunez put in a fine performance as he threatened Arsenal all game long. The Uruguayan made use of Liverpool’s desire to hit the ball long, running in behind and wreaking havoc in the channels.
Danny Murphy had positive things to say on Match of the Day 2. He said Nunez was ‘the one positive’ for Liverpool on the day.
“I have to say he was one positive today,” said Murphy. “Darwin Nunez was very, very good.”
Darwin Nunez vs Arsenal
It is incredibly easy to see what Nunez can bring for Liverpool. He’s physical, quick, direct and never stops looking for ways to hurt teams. The number of chances he gets is phenomenal – all we need now is for the 23-year-old to put them away.
He did manage that against Arsenal, of course. Nunez finished for Liverpool’s first goal after good work by Luis Diaz. It was a goal that came from direct passing – Trent Alexander-Arnold firing a high, long ball at the Arsenal back four.

With that threat in the side, Liverpool can trouble any side. No one can afford to push high with Nunez in the team and we just need the Reds to control games better to take advantage.
Because as things stand, Liverpool give the ball away high up the pitch fairly regularly. That means teams will press high as the chances of finding a chance of their own outweighs giving up one to a long ball. Once the Reds can start keeping the ball better against a press, that will change.
Only then will we really see the best of Nunez. Things are encouraging so far but Liverpool can get much more out of him. The potential there is massive.
