‘Shocking that’: Jamie Carragher’s instant reaction to the second Arsenal goal vs Liverpool

Jamie Carragher gave an instant reaction to Arsenal scoring their second goal vs Liverpool on Sunday. The Reds made mistakes.

Jamie Carragher wasn’t happy at all as Arsenal scored a second goal right on half-time against Liverpool. The Reds had done well to fight back into the game after going behind inside a minute.

But that was all undone in an instant. Liverpool had a free-kick that should have ended the half. Instead, they were defending a counter-attack – and doing it badly.

“Shocking that, 1 minute to go until half time,” Carragher wrote on Twitter. “Another defensive shambles.”

We’re completely on Carragher’s side here. Every single part of that goal was awful from a Liverpool point of view.

For starters, they left themselves needlessly vulnerable on the free kick. Far too many players went forward, while it was always difficult to guarantee a ball in behind the defence from that range. Arsenal knew the counter-attack was on and left their attackers in position to do so.

From there, both Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold struggled with Gabriel Martinelli. One of them, let alone both, should have slowed him down.

And then no Liverpool player follows Bukayo Saka to the back post. It was all-around terrible and one we can’t even put down to the formation. Just poor decisions, poor one-on-one defending and poor tracking.

‘Shocking’ truly is the word then. Liverpool both started and ended the half badly, unable to stop Arsenal from doing what they wanted. It’s especially frustrating as the Reds were solid enough in between the goals.

But moments like this ruin the good work and they’re why Liverpool can’t string decent form together right now. It’s a complete contrast to the last few years and Jurgen Klopp has to fix it fast.
