Virgil van Dijk has hailed one Rangers player as ‘outstanding’ for their performance against Liverpool at Anfield. Alan McGregor kept the Scots in the game.
Liverpool beat Rangers 2-0 at Anfield this week in a very solid display. It was an important one, too, as the Reds attempt to qualify from their Champions League group.
The 4-1 defeat in Naples to open the competition hit hard and put Liverpool on the backfoot. Wins over Ajax and Rangers correct things a touch, though – even if it’ll be tough to outright win the group.
More than that, Liverpool needed a comfortable win and a solid performance. Those have been few and far between this season, with the Reds frequently struggling to control games. A change of formation, however, made a world of difference and Liverpool put in the kind of display you’d associated with the six-time European champions.
In truth, the 2-0 win should have been more. Liverpool created a plethora of chances at Anfield, only for one Rangers player to stand in their way – Alan McGregor.

“Three points, overall a very good performance and a lot of things that we wanted to do came out,” said Van Dijk, per Liverpoolfc.com.
“We created a lot of chances, I think their goalkeeper was outstanding, kept them in the game and yeah, I think overall it was very important to gain confidence and keep the clean sheet and do very well. I think we did.”
Darwin Nunez will be particularly annoyed that McGregor had the game he did. The Uruguayan peppered the goal with shots all night long but found the goalkeeper equal to the lot.
Diogo Jota, too, saw a fantastic effort met by the 40-year-old. In truth, Liverpool can take it all positively. They created so much at Anfield – enough to win by five – and most goalkeepers won’t have a game like McGregor did.
Nunez and co. will have better luck next time.
