‘Very optimistic’: Klopp loved what one Liverpool player was ‘frequently’ doing this week

Jurgen Klopp wants everyone to feel ‘optimistic’ about what he saw from Darwin Nunez against Rangers. The Uruguayan did one thing well.

Darwin Nunez had a strange game against Rangers this week. He was incredibly dangerous at top and had more chances than most teams would muster in such a game.

Still, he failed to score. Alan McGregor was equal to everything Nunez peppered on goal and the Uruguayan endured a frustrating night. If Liverpool hadn’t gone on to win, this would have felt disastrous.

Fortunately, Trent Alexander-Arnold curled in a free-kick and Mohamed Salah converted a penalty. Liverpool’s 2-0 win keeps them on track to progress from their group and allows Jurgen Klopp to focus solely on the positives.

And he saw them in Nunez’s game. In fact, the boss is ‘very optimistic’ about what he witnessed.

“One of the things he showed so far in all the games he played [is] that he brings himself quite frequently in good finishing positions, which is actually the most important thing for a striker,” Klopp told a press conference.

“That’s why everybody should be, or could be, very optimistic about what’s coming from him in the future. That was absolutely good.”

Eventually, the goals will come. It would be far more worrying if Nunez wasn’t getting any chances but Liverpool find it relatively easy to create for him.

And we’ve got to remember that the striker is 23 and not Erling Haaland. The Norwegian has perhaps altered perceptions a tad (or a lot) but he’s not the norm. It will take time for a young player to adapt properly and Nunez needs to be allowed it.

We’re with Klopp on things being optimistic. Games like Tuesday will be rare and more often than not, Nunez will end up with a couple. Things should only get easier from here.
