‘I have to improve’: Harvey Elliott pledges to ‘master’ one thing about his game

Harvey Elliott is looking to improve one aspect of his game in order to make it at Liverpool. The teenager is an outstanding prospect.

Harvey Elliott believes his defending is the area where he must improve right now. The youngster, who developed as a winger, has become a midfielder at Liverpool and isn’t quite at he right level yet.

“I think defending is one [area to improve],” he says, per the Liverpool Echo. “Obviously myself, as an attacking player, I have had to make the switch to central midfield and there are different changes I’ve had to make to my game.

“I take on a lot more responsibility in terms of defending as well as attacking so I need to do as well as I can.

“So, for me, defending is a big thing I have to improve on and I have been working on it so far this season.

“It’s going to take a while to get used to it and master it but I’ve had chats with the gaffer and the coaching team on how I can do that.”

There’s little doubt that Elliott is a magnificent talent. His skills for his age are remarkable, as is his mentality. Everyone who has ever worked with him sees it.

But Liverpool are asking a lot of him. It’s his playmaking that got Elliott to Liverpool and now he’s here, they want him to change his position and playing style.

On the one hand, it’s a massive compliment. Liverpool feel Elliott has the ability to learn an entirely new position and adapt accordingly. On the other, it means the teenager spends time learning a completely new side of the game.

Long-term, this should be beneficial and Liverpool will hope to have a near-perfect player in a few years. Certainly, Elliott has that kind of talent. If he truly can learn the defensive side of the game to a high standard, the Reds will boast one of the best around.
