‘One of my favourites’: Klopp wants to see more moments like Liverpool’s 26th-minute attack last night

Jurgen Klopp loved Liverpool’s attack in the 26th minute against Rangers and wants to see more like it. The Reds tried something new.

Jurgen Klopp tried something new against Rangers as Liverpool looked to correct their stuttering form. He ditched his 4-3-3 – a formation that was won the lot over the last five years – in favour of a 4-4-2.

It was a big decision, if only because Liverpool had precisely one training session to work on it. Still, things looked good and the Reds put in one of their best and most controlled performances all season.

Klopp loved some moments, in particular, and picked one out after the game. It came in the 26th minute as Darwin Nunez darted in behind down the right-hand channel and looked to cut-back for Luis Diaz.

Both Diaz and Diogo Jota had made runs at goal, however, and nothing came of it. Still, Klopp wants to see more of that.

“We had great moments [vs Rangers],” Klopp told BT Sport. “One of my favourite moments where I could see things we could do more often was when Darwin cut the ball back.

“But the other two strikers were towards the line. If one of them stands [still] it’s a perfect pass, actually. So unlucky in moments, offensively. Rock-solid defensively, apart from the last few minutes.”

We so nearly saw the beauty of using four forwards at once. Salah dropped deeper and played the ball to Nunez as he ran the channels. Liverpool then still had two forwards in the box looking to finish.

The only ‘problem’ was that they both made the same run. Maybe each would argue that it was the best run and that the Uruguayan should have fired across goal, but it’s a hint at how brutal this quartet could be to defend.

All four players involved, creating space for one another and pulling defenders all over the place. Liverpool used two to create the chance and had two forwards ready to score – all it needed was one to hold their run. With that, the Reds can attack every space available when going forward.

We’ll see if Klopp sticks with this system, then. It would be the brave choice and the rewards could be worth it.
