Ben Davies could make his Anfield debut today, according to reports. The defender left Liverpool in the summer for Rangers.
This comes from the Liverpool Echo. Absences in the Rangers squad could mean Ben Davies comes into their XI tonight to face Liverpool.
The defender moved to Ibrox from Liverpool in the summer, having never actually played for the Reds. His arrival during the injury crisis in early 2021 never resulted in gametime. Instead, he sat on the bench for the first year before moving to Sheffield United on loan.
This summer saw Davies sign for Rangers permanently. Not he’s in their squad for a trip to Anfield, meaning tonight could be his debut at the ground.
Ben Davies set for Anfield debut
Jurgen Klopp talked up Davies in his press conference, calling the defender a ‘really valuable’ player. That’s because the defender can play multiple positions and systems- he never found the right one with Liverpool.
“Ben’s a really good footballer,” said Klopp. “He was here, good build-up, good defender, all these kind of things.
“In our situation, it didn’t work out here but that doesn’t make him a bad player. Not at all. Especially, he’s a really good boy. I think that’s what Rangers wanted and that’s what Rangers got.”

It’s a strange situation, then. Davies returns to Liverpool for this game but the Anfield crowd will see him for the first time. Is it a welcome or a welcome back? It’s hard to tell.
Davies is, unfortunately, one of the stranger transfers we’ve seen at Liverpool. He arrived during a crisis where the Reds needed options but never got a chance. Instead, he slipped behind Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips – two players who haven’t gone on to nail down first-team squad places.
Above all, we’re just curious to see what he can do, so hopefully that debut is on the cards today.
