Ally McCoist picked out two Liverpool players for their performance vs Rangers. One visiting player outperformed both, however.
Ally McCoist hailed two Liverpool players after their 2-0 win against Rangers on Tuesday evening. The Reds continued their Champions League campaign with a dominant display, but two stars stood out for McCoist.
Trent Alexander-Arnold took the headlines with a brilliant free-kick, and McCoist thinks it’s exactly what he needed.
“That [goal] will give him a major, major boost this evening,” McCoist told BT Sport. “His skipper was out of this world, Trent Alexander-Arnold was out of this world but arguably, believe it or not, the Man of the Match might have been the Rangers goalkeeper.
“He was beaten by a free-kick that was out of this world and he was beaten by a penalty. But if it wasn’t for him, it could have been a far bigger scoreline.”
Liverpool players shine vs Rangers
Alexander-Arnold was back to his brilliant best against Rangers. His free-kick was the standout, of course, but the full-back put in an overall game to be proud of.
The way he got forward, positioned himself, and passed the ball was all perfect. And Jordan Henderson, as McCoist says, put in exactly the performance he needed to.
Henderson covered Alexander-Arnold when the full-back pushed on and found that easier to do so in Liverpool’s new formation. He marshalled midfield alongside Thiago and created the perfect base for the side. The Reds had more control here than they have in some time.
And so we wonder if Jurgen Klopp will stick with this system against Arsenal. Liverpool not only played better as a team but every single player looked more like themselves. Alexander-Arnold and Henderson were fantastic examples of that.
A big decision for Klopp, then, as the Reds face their biggest game of the season.
