Villarreal are desperately trying to renew winger Alex Baena‘s contract as Liverpool plan to make a move for him.
That’s according to Sport, who claim that the Spanish club are looking to increase the 21-year-old’s release clause.
Baena’s current clause is claimed to be standing at around £31m. That could make the youngster a potential bargain for Liverpool.
But Villarreal are said to be keen to ensure they don’t lose out on a big sale. As a result, they’re planning to hand Baena a new deal to reflect his progress this season. As well as Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring the Spaniard.

Baena bursts into life in La Liga
Baena has been a standout performer for Villarreal so far this season. After spending last season out on-loan at second division Almeria, he’s burst into life in La Liga.
He’s scored three goals in six games in the top division, adding another four in the Europa Conference League.
Of course, this is a pretty tiny sample size but it looks as though Baena could be a star in the making. Subsequently, it may be wise for Liverpool to firm up any interest sooner rather than later.
£31m is not an insignificant sum by any means. But should Baena continue to progress at the speed he currently is doing, it could turn out to be a bargain.

The Spain U21 international is primarily a right-sided winger who has pace and can beat a man with ease.
However, he looks to be adept at using his left foot too, which does leave scope for playing on the other side.
With several Premier League sides said to be in the running, Baena will be one to watch as the season progresses. If Villarreal fail to tie him down to a more lucrative contract, we can maybe expect to see him in England soon.
