Report: 'Exceptional' Liverpool player is now close to full fitness after his groin injury

Caoimhín Kelleher is close to a Liverpool return, according to reports. The Irishman has been out with a groin injury.

This comes from the Athletic. They claim that Caoimhín Kelleher is close to full fitness after missing the first part of the season with a groin injury.

Kelleher was unable to even take a part in pre-season. It meant that even after his injury healed, the goalkeeper was nowhere near ready to participate for the first-team.

As Liverpool’s no.2, Kelleher would have deputised for Alisson Becker in the Community Shield. Adrián had to take the spot thanks to the injury. Fortunately, Liverpool were able to win even with a third-choice goalkeeper.

You never really have to celebrate your backup goalkeeper returning but Liverpool will breathe a sigh of relief. As good as Alisson is, he almost always suffers an injury that keeps him out for part of the season.

Kelleher is unquestionably the best candidate to replace him if/when that happens. Jurgen Klopp rates him incredibly highly, calling him ‘exceptional’ within the last year.

It’s faith that Kelleher has paid back, too, with some brilliant performances in the cups. We imagine Liverpool will ask him to do the same this year – the condensed season will strain every player in the squad.

Alisson will be under that strain, too, and it’s difficult to know what state he’ll be in post-World Cup. Kelleher could find himself playing Premier League games in late December and January.

And Liverpool might not be against that. There’s a difficult conversation on the way, with Kelleher almost certainly good enough to start for other Premier League sides. Will he want to play second-fiddle for much longer? It seems unlikely.

Finding first-team football for him this season will go a long way in any talks, though.
