Two former Liverpool stars have been tipped to find success as managers. Rafa Benitez’s former side are making waves.
Rafa Marquez believes two former Liverpool stars will make it big as managers. That’s the sense he gets after working with them on a course in Spain.
Marquez, the former Barcelona player, now works as the Catalonians’ B-team boss. He spent time working alongside Fernando Torres – currently in charge of Atletico Madrid’s U19 team – and sees a bright future in him.
“Fernando Torres has great abilities,” he said, per Mundo Deportivo. “Equally, Alvaro Arbeloa. You could already see they stood out during the course.”
Former Liverpool stars as managers
Both Torres and Arbeloa were a part of Rafa Benitez’s greatest Liverpool side. That 2008/09 team should have delivered major trophies, in truth, but fell incredibly short of something special.
And it’s a fine reflection on Benitez that so many of that team are moving into decent managerial roles. Sami Hyypia was the first, having a decent-enough spell at Bayer Leverkusen before struggling elsewhere.
Steven Gerrard has since gone into management, of course, and is at Aston Villa. His Scottish league title with Rangers is unquestionably the high-point of his career thus far.
Dirk Kuyt is another in senior management. He signed with ADO Den Haag in the summer as they look to find promotion to the Eredivisie.
Xabi Alonso had a spell with Real Sociedad’s B team, earning them their first promotion to Spain’s second tier for 50 years. He has since left them, however.
Success is undoubtedly mixed, then, particularly as Gerrard struggles to find a rhythm with Villa. Both Torres and Arbeloa will both hope to find the consistency that the others perhaps lack – though, it’s still very early for all of Benitez’s former players.
As for Liverpool, we imagine they’ll be watching their ex-stars’ careers very closely.
