Thiago had high praise for former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso this week. The Reds are fortunate to have called on both.
Liverpool legends take on Manchester United legends this week and Thiago had a nice message ahead of the game. He reserved special praise for one player, in particular, however.
Xabi Alonso played with Thiago at Bayern Munich from 2014 through to 2017, as well as the Spanish national team. The former clearly left an impression on the now-Liverpool star as the Reds’ no.6 hailed Alonso in his video.
“One of the best I’ve ever played with,” Thiago said of the Reds legend.
It’s incredibly high praise, given the wealth of talent Thiago has played with. As Liverpool fans know, though, Alonso was truly something special.
Thiago hails Xabi Alonso
Alonso was a revelation at Liverpool on arriving in 2004. He immediately proved to be the best passer the club had seen in over a decade, capable of picking out absolutely anyone on the pitch.
Admittedly, his form faltered for a couple of years, sparking talk that Rafa Benitez wanted to move him out. Alonso rebounded in 2008/09, though, and became one of the world’s best midfielders.

His importance that season can’t be understated and it wasn’t exactly a shock to see the Reds collapse once he left for Real Madrid. There was essentially no one they could sign to replace his passing.
In fact, Liverpool simply didn’t find another passer on that level until Thiago arrived in 2020. The Reds’ latest Spanish midfielder is simply sensational and has a case to be the world’s best passer over the last year.
Liverpool have been blessed, then. Few clubs have held passers as brilliant as both Alonso and Thiago – Bayern, Barcelona and Real Madrid are perhaps the only ones over the last 15 years.
