Liverpool target Ethan Nwaneri is something special, according to Rio Ferdinand. The Arsenal prospect made history this weekend.

Ethan Nwaneri broke Harvey Elliott’s record this weekend as he became the youngest ever Premier League player. Nwaneri only turned 15 in March – it’s a record that could stand for some time.

There’s plenty of speculation as to why Arsenal decided to play Nwaneri, too. Mikel Arteta says it was simply a ‘gut feeling’, but the player’s future could also play a role here.

The Times report that Liverpool, along with Manchester City and Manchester United, are after Nwaneri. Arsenal are keen to keep him, of course, and hope that first-team involvement leads to the teenager committing his future to the club.

And that future looks very bright. Nwaneri carries a considerable reputation as a youth player, despite his inexperience. Rio Ferdinand has heard that he’s one of the most significant prospects as a 15-year-old in some time.

“There’s no doubting this kid’s ability,” Ferdinand told FIVE. “I’ve heard it from coaches that are at the club and from various different people in the game at that level.

“There aren’t many 15-year-olds in the last 10 or so years that have the ability that this guy is showing on a consistent basis. We’re talking the [Phil] Foden’s of this world. He’s at a similar level.”

Well, every club would like to pick up the next Phil Foden – maybe they have a chance here. Arsenal playing Nwaneri may have thrust him into the public spotlight but there’s no doubt that Liverpool and the like have had him on their radar for some time.

If Ferdinand is hearing these things, after all, the Reds’ scouts will have all kinds of information. Especially as the Gunners’ youth setup continues to produce interesting talents.

Convincing Nwaneri to leave Arsenal would be a massive take but not an impossible one. He’s too young to commit his future properly, for one thing, and the next two years will be massive for everyone involved. Including those trying to snap him up.
