Liverpool boast a special ability that ‘not many teams’ have, says John Aldridge. It’s one that will save their season.

Liverpool haven’t exactly started this season well. The win over Bournemouth – and what a win it was – is essentially their sole ‘proper’ performance. Everything else has been below par.

Thus as we head into the international break, Liverpool are all the way down in eight – seven places lower than planned. They’re also nine points behind leaders Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand.

Now, things could be far worse. The fact that no one has managed to go completely undefeated keeps Liverpool just about at a touching distance of the top spot. That should be enough to scare rivals, too, as John Aldridge explained.

“Liverpool could have been miles behind [Manchester] City if they had made the most of the incredible contributions of Erling Haaland so far,” he wrote for the Sunday World.

“Not many teams in the Premier League have the potential to go on an eight- or 10-game winning run, but Liverpool can do that.

“If they get [Mo] Salah firing, get Thiago back in the midfield for an extended period without injury, find a solution to the defensive problems and build some momentum, this can still turn out to be a great season for Liverpool.

“The concern is there are a lot of if, buts and maybes in that last sentence and Liverpool haven’t been dealing with those in recent years.”

Aldridge is absolutely right. Liverpool actually felt behind in the title race last season, too, and were a ways off City by New Year. Then came a dominant run where the Reds consistently overpowered teams.

By the end, only a late collapse by Aston Villa in the final 30 minutes of the season prevented Liverpool from winning the title. Nine points and a game in hand hardly feels like a gap, with that in mind.

But as Aldridge says, things need to click first. There are a lot of things that aren’t quite right and Thiago’s fitness largely comes down to good fortune. Jurgen Klopp does believe that injuries will clear up a little by October 1st, though.

If things can go Liverpool’s way for the next little while, though, they’ll make up the ground quickly. This season is far from over and the Reds may only be getting started.
