Spain’s decision on Thiago this week was a major boost for Liverpool. The Reds need their ‘crucial’ star at his very best.
Spain boss Luis Enrique decided not to include Thiago in his squad for the internationals over the next two weeks. Instead, the midfielder will remain with Liverpool.
Thiago has only had one start since the opening day, after all. That came against Ajax in midweek where his display inspired a difficult 2-1 win over the Dutch champions.
That clearly wasn’t enough for Enrique to include him – Sergio Busquets is another veteran midfielder left out after recent injury woes. The Spain boss isn’t taking chances right now.
And that, you have to say, is a major boost for Liverpool.
Spain’s decision on Thiago
Liverpool haven’t hit the ground running this season, as you may have noticed. They’ve struggled against opposition aggression, failing to play through a press and build attacks.
The difficulties did admittedly start with Thiago in the team against Fulham. The Reds couldn’t find a win that day and relied on Darwin Nunez to make things happen from the bench.
In every game since, though, Thiago’s absence has been felt. He’s become a ‘crucial’ player for Liverpool, as Tim Sherwood pointed out last season for Premier League Productions.

Thiago is the one who can be ‘press resistant’ in the middle, forcing teams to back off. His passing range is such that he can get Liverpool moving forward regardless of the other team, too, and the Reds’ best football is with Thiago on the pitch.
Thus having him resting over the next two weeks is a dream come true. He’ll get rest where most other stars won’t, which should benefit the player when things resume on October 1st. But it’s also a break that could benefit Thiago’s entire season.
After all, the World Cup isn’t too far away – only six weeks after the Premier League resumes. Most stars won’t get rest this season as they head into that tournament and then straight back to the club game in the New Year. Thiago, who we still expect to go to Qatar, gets a break now which should make the upcoming period easier on him.
