Chelsea vs Liverpool this weekend has been postponed. It pushes the Reds towards a nightmare scenario.

The Premier League announced on Monday that Chelsea vs Liverpool has been postponed. The Queen’s funeral, happening the following day, will stretch police forces thin and that could postpone the Reds’ trip to Stamford Bridge.

This comes after the entire Premier League cancelled the entire weekend last time out. Liverpool, therefore, have a fixture with Wolves to push into an already congested calendar – and they now need to do the same with Chelsea.

It moves the Reds towards a nightmare scenario that could seriously disrupt their season.

Liverpool are already struggling with numbers this season. Injuries keep biting them and the team lacks their usual intensity.

And with the World Cup on the way, it’s difficult to see how Liverpool will climb out of it. The fixture list is a strange one as it is, with the Champions League happening virtually every week ahead of the tournament in Qatar. Players need to manage their fitness differently, knowing they can’t afford to burn out ahead of the World Cup.

But then, they can’t afford to burn out for the business end of the season, either. It’s a tricky situation and one that no one will manage perfectly.

It becomes even more difficult, however, when games come in quick succession. That’s the reality for Liverpool now, as Wolves and Chelsea will be forced into the calendar, presumably before Christmas.

How do you play those games while also managing a squad that struggles for fitness? The only chance Liverpool had of avoiding injuries was spacing games out as much as possible. That’s now out of the window and the injury issues could worsen.

The saving grace is that Liverpool do have several stars who won’t play at the World Cup. That at least allows the likes of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson to get proper rest after a very busy period.

For the rest, though, things are about to get even tougher as the games come fast than ever.
