Joe Gomez put in a ‘world-class’ display vs Everton as Liverpool drew 0-0 at Goodison Park. The centre-back was back to his best.
Things didn’t exactly go to plan for Liverpool against Everton. The Reds hit the woodwork three times in the match – their entire front-three can come away feeling unfortunate. But in truth, the team just didn’t click to their highest level.
That’s been a recurring theme this season, of course. However, there were a few bright sparks in the game.
One of those was Joe Gomez, who put in a brilliant performance vs Everton. He was a defensive rock, with only one real mistake to talk about.
That came in the first half as his poor touch in the box opened things up for Neil Maupay. Fortunately, Virgil van Dijk got across to block. That was really the only foot Gomez put wrong, though, and the rest of his game was near-perfect.
The standout stat? Five tackles in the game from five attempts. Everton kept targeting the English defender but never got the better of Gomez. That was a match-high for Liverpool, unsurprisingly.
Another match high came with touches. Gomez had 97, with only Van Dijk managing to match that. Gomez even created a chance with the ball, too – it was his pass that led to Darwin Nunez’s brilliant effort that hit the bar.
But it was defensively where Gomez truly shone brightly. Three interceptions (another match-high for Liverpool) and three clearances just show how dominant the 25-year-old really was.

Jurgen Klopp believes Joe Gomez is a ‘world-class’ player but we haven’t seen it too much over the last two years. Gomez’s injury kept him out of action for so long, robbing him of a regular place in the side.
Now we’re seeing what he can do once again, though. This was a magnificent performance and one that reminds us of Gomez at his best during the title-winning season.
It also goes to show why Liverpool have committed to Gomez and Ibrahima Konaté as the partnership of their future. With the two of them developing together over the next few years, the Reds should have something truly incredible.
