The national media have criticised Fabio Carvalho’s performance for Liverpool against Everton this afternoon.
Carvalho was in the Liverpool starting line up for the first time ever at Goodison Park. After scoring a dramatic winner on Wednesday night, few could argue that the 20-year-old didn’t deserve it.
But things didn’t go to plan for the Portuguese youngster. The Liverpool Echo rated him as a five out of ten, declaring that he ‘looked lost’ before being subbed off with an injury at half-time.
Both Goal and The Daily Mail were equally unimpressed, also scoring him five out of ten. Goal reported that he ‘struggled to make an impact,” while the Mail said he was ‘not quite on the pace.’
Not the full debut Carvalho was looking for.
Better days to come for Carvalho
Five out of ten probably feels about right for Carvalho’s performance today. It was a big opportunity for him to make his mark from the beginning, but he couldn’t quite deliver.
Of course, that wasn’t for the want of trying. Carvalho was as industrious as always, but couldn’t quite make anything stick.
He wasn’t the only one in that regard though, and will still take the positives from the experience today.
Unluckily, the day did turn into a painful one for Carvalho. After running into the man-mountain that is Amadou Onana, the Portugal U21 international had to come off at half-time.
Jurgen Klopp’s initial assessment was that his player suffered nothing more than a dead leg.
That looks likely to rule Carvalho out of Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Napoli. But beyond that, he hopefully shouldn’t be out for too much longer.
The Reds no.28 has already had far better days in a Liverpool shirt. With his first start now out of the way, he’s bound to have even more in the future.
