Joe Gomez was Liverpool’s best player against Everton today as The Reds played out a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park.
That’s according to BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas. Speaking during commentary on the game, Jenas said that Gomez had been excellent against the Toffees.
“He’s been good today, Gomez. Liverpool’s best player,” he said.
Gomez was starting his fourth game in a row alongside Virgil Van Dijk in the middle of Liverpool’s defence.
Gomez makes his case for regular starts
With Joel Matip back fit and in training, Jurgen Klopp had to decide whether or not to continue with Gomez on Saturday.
The 25-year-old has been good during his run in the team and perhaps deservedly got the nod.
And throughout the match, Gomez vindicated Klopp’s decision to stick with him. He was commanding all game long and showed good invention on the front-foot for Liverpool, too.
The defender wasn’t fazed despite some physical play from Neal Maupay and coped well against the lively Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray.
In fact, he was probably the better of the two centre-backs on the day. Van Dijk didn’t look as dominating as usual and was perhaps lucky to avoid a red card.
We did eventually see Matip too, as Klopp moved Gomez to right-back for the last ten minutes.
It will be interesting to see whether Klopp decides to reinstate the 31-year-old Matip to the line-up for Wednesday’s game against Napoli.
The Cameroonian is maybe the manager’s first-choice when everyone is fit. But on this display here, Gomez is doing his very best to change that.
