Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak has praised the atmosphere at Anfield last night for Liverpool.
Speaking to nufc.co.uk after last night’s dramatic 2-1 win for Liverpool, Isak gave his thoughts on the game.
“I’m gutted that we weren’t able to get a point at the end but very happy for my debut and first goal,” he said. “The atmosphere was very good and our fans were doing well as well, making a lot of noise and helping us.”
The Swedish striker put his new team ahead on his first game for Newcastle. He was also perhaps unfortunate to see a second ruled out in a tight VAR call. A glimpse into what a good signing he could be.
Isak comes back to haunt Liverpool, but Reds have the last laugh
If reports over recent months are to be believed, Liverpool were also in the running to sign Isak this summer.
Back in March, there were claims that The Reds had made an ‘informal’ bid of £60m for the then Real Sociedad man.
However, Liverpool were reportedly told that they’d have to pay closer to the 22-year-old’s £75m release clause.
In the end, it seems as though Newcastle did in fact get their man for around £60m (BBC Sport). A hefty fee no doubt, but last night Isak showed why Liverpool may have been interested.
His movement was excellent and he pressed from the front all night long. He took his goal extremely well and the offside finish was brilliant as well.
It was a relief to see him exit the pitch to be replaced by Chris Wood with 25 minutes left to play. From a Newcastle perspective, that change from Eddie Howe could be seen as being a real turning point in the game.
Liverpool won’t care about that, the win was incredibly important and the manner in which it was won should serve to kick them on.
The crowd kept the team going throughout the game. Despite the inevitable put-downs from the Newcastle end, their heads didn’t drop and they were rewarded with a moment to take the roof off right at the end.
