‘Tell you what’: Commentator says Liverpool have ‘such a clever’ player after what he did in 34th minute tonight

Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino was called ‘such a clever player’ for a pass in the 34th minute against Newcastle United tonight.

Roberto Firmino is in fantastic form right now. Nothing showed that better than his remarkable performance against Bournemouth, of course, but he carried that into Liverpool’s meeting with Newcastle United.

It was Firmino who scored the Reds’ equalising goal, after all. He came onto a Mohamed Salah pass beautifully to roll past Nick Pope.

But that wasn’t the only moment of quality from the Brazilian. Firmino nearly created a goal in the first half as he played in Luis Diaz. The Colombian rounded the goalkeeper but couldn’t find the net while off-balance.

Lucy Ward, doing commentary for BT Sport, raved about Firmino after the pass. She loved the way he drifted into space and saw the run from Diaz.

“Tell you what, Firmino is such a clever player,” said Ward. “So aware of the space in front and behind the back four there and he knows where to put himself. Comes into that pocket and sees the pass.”

Firmino really is in fantastic form right now. He’s finding his groove at a time he has to, as well. Darwin Nunez is waiting in the wings to take Liverpool’s no.9 spot – but Firmino won’t give it up easily.

What’s particularly great is that he’s delivering an all-around game. This isn’t just a spree of goals but creativity, link-play, defending – Firmino at his best, essentially.

In the final year of his contract, the forward is giving Liverpool a massive decision to make. They won’t want to lose a player this good, especially for free next year. A couple more performances like this and the club will have to shell out to keep Firmino.

You can’t lose a player this good without a fight.
