Report: Liverpool still watching ‘unbelievable’ winger, but he could be about to sign a new contract and stay

Liverpool are still watching Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, as he mulls over whether or not to sign a new contract.

That’s according to The Times, who claim that Liverpool join Manchester City in ‘closely monitoring’ the 20-year-old’s situation.

Saka’s current deal runs out in 2024 and he is yet to agree to new terms. However, Arsenal are said to be ‘confident’ that the England international will stay on at his boyhood club.

To that end, the Gunners have reportedly offered him a deal which would put him in-line with their top earners. Despite the offer being on the table though, Saka is still yet to commit.

Saka’s future still not secure for Arsenal

It’s a little bit of a surprise that Saka’s contract situation is still rumbling on at Arsenal.

As an academy graduate, and one of their best players, you’d have thought things would be tied up pretty quickly. It hasn’t played out that way, though.

There’s still enough time left on the deal for Arsenal not to worry too much. But if things drag on until next summer, they’ll start to get twitchy.

It’s only really at that point that Liverpool could perhaps swoop in. With just a day left in this transfer window, it isn’t going to happen now. Maybe The Reds could test Arsenal’s resolve in January but that also seems unlikely.

Instead, next summer would be the right time to push. Remarkably, Saka would still be just twenty-one then. A lot could maybe depend on whether or not Arsenal finally secure Champions League football this season.

Saka has been on record saying how much he’d love to play in the competition. Unfortunately for him, his current club failed to qualify for it yet again last season. That could be playing a part in the delay in getting things sorted.

Either way, it doesn’t sound as though it’s a done deal yet. For Liverpool and City to be so keenly interested, they must have some hope that a transfer remains a possibility.

Maybe Liverpool will need Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson to put on the charm offensive during the World Cup with England. Trent previously called Saka an ‘unbelievable’ player via ITV Sport. Perhaps it’s time to put agent Trent to work.
