Jordan Henderson is proud of Harvey Elliott after the Liverpool player fought through grief at the weekend. Elliott was ‘incredible’, says the captain.
Jordan Henderson wanted to pick out Harvey Elliott for praise in his program notes ahead of Newcastle United tonight. The Liverpool captain believes the teenager showed ‘incredible’ strength to play against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Elliott was playing in the wake of losing his Grandmother. The emotion he felt was plain for all to see after his goal – he had tears in his eyes as he gestured towards the heavens.
And Henderson wants to make sure people realise just how difficult that was for Elliott.
“As everyone will now be aware, Harvey’s nan passed away in the week of the game,” wrote Henderson. “He was obviously very close to her and, like anyone else who has been in a similar situation, the loss hit him hard.
“Yet he still had the maturity, the professionalism and the character to go out and perform like he did.
“When I was a young player coming through the ranks at Sunderland I used to think that nothing went wrong in the lives of the first-team lads because in my eyes they were superhuman. I think a lot of people still think like that, but the opposite is true.”
“I know as his captain I was proud of him myself,” Henderson went on to say.

Elliott’s mentality and maturity is remarkable for a 19-year-old. As we’ve written before, he’ll go far in the game simply on the back of that. The fact he’s a world-class talent, too, just shows how special he truly is.

But Saturday was about far more than that. It’s tough for anyone to go and deliver professionalism at their job in the wake of a loss like that. Doing it under pressure in front of 54,000 people is just on another level. Honestly, we’re not sure how Elliott – or any footballer – manages that.
Henderson’s notes are well worth a read on Liverpoolfc.com as he goes further into his pride of Elliott.
