Liverpool are now making a last-gasp attempt to bolster their midfield with a bid for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz.
So says Torcedores journalist Matheus Leal. Taking to Twitter, the journalist insisted that Liverpool are making a last minute move of £20m for Luiz.
According to Leal, Luiz would be welcome to the ‘change of teams.’ The 24-year-old only has a year left on his contract and would reportedly be ready for a move.
However, Villa are said to be confident that they can get more than the £20m currently on the table, despite his contract situation.
An interesting option, but unlikely to happen
Unfortunately for those desperate for a midfield addition, any midfield addition, a move for Luiz seems unlikely at this stage.
An offer of this nature would have a whiff of desperation about it. Liverpool don’t do desperation in the transfer market. As we’ve seen in the past, they’d much rather sit things out and go again later down the line.
Not that Luiz wouldn’t be a good signing. His star has fallen slightly over the last year or so, but he’s quietly been very good for Villa since they were promoted to the Premier League.
He’s a full Brazil international, one who former Liverpool schemer and current teammate Phillipe Coutinho called a ‘great player’ via Globo Esportes.
Luiz has only just turned twenty-four and has three full years of Premier League experience under his belt.

For all of those reasons, £20m would seem like a relative bargain. The Brazilian could also play in the no.6 or no.8 role that Liverpool are reportedly looking for.
But it just isn’t Liverpool.
Perhaps The Reds will surprise everyone and go off-piste in their hunt for a midfielder in the next 39 hours. But from what Jurgen Klopp has been saying on the matter, this isn’t the kind of deal they’d be looking for.
You just never know, though.
