Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has said that he’d love to manage Jurgen Klopp’s current group of centre-halves.

Skrtel was speaking to liverpoolfc.com after being announced as the latest addition to the Liverpool FC Legends squad. Asked about Klopp’s options in his old position, the Slovakian said he’d love to get the chance to coach five players in particular.

“I would love to be the manager if I had players like Virgil, Matip, Konate, Joe Gomez and Phillips,” said Skrtel. “If you see the centre-backs we have, it’s maybe the best squad in this position in the world. They are top players and I would love to be involved if I’m the manager and have players like them.”

Liverpool are indeed well-stocked at centre-half. With Konate and Matip currently out injured though, The Reds could do with a player like Skrtel to step into the breach.

Do Liverpool have the best group of CB’s in world football

Skrtel’s claim about the Liverpool defensive options does stack up. You’ll be hard-pushed to find another squad with the quality that The Reds have at the back.

Looking across the Premier League, perhaps only Manchester City can match Liverpool’s four, with Phillips in reserve.

John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake is pretty strong it must be said. But it’s also worth pointing out that the cost of those four players was around £210m.

Liverpool’s quintet cost almost half of that at £114m. When you factor in that £75m of that was on Van Dijk alone, you start to see how well Liverpool have recruited in the position over recent years.

Elsewhere Barcelona have good options having brought in Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen this summer. Those two were added to a defence that already contained Ronald Araujo, Gerard Pique and Eric Garcia.

Good players, but we’d still take Liverpool’s defence any day of the week.

Bayern’s quartet of Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard looks strong. But Pavard usually plays on the right, with Hernandez often a left-back.

No, we’re sticking with Skrtel’s claim – Liverpool have the best centre-back foursome in world football. Now let’s get them all fit.
