Liverpool want Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge before the transfer window closes, according to reports. They’ve tracked the player for a long time.

This comes from the Yorkshire Post. They claim that Liverpool have their eyes on Sander Berge before the end of the transfer window next week.

Sheffield United aren’t eager to sell the player but his £35m release clause could take things out of their hands. They’ve already rejected bids, in fact, and it does appear that they’d want the full clause.

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool want a midfielder, of course. He told journalists ahead of the Bournemouth game that the Reds will see what they can do.

“I know we have had this discussion since it all started and I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder and I was wrong. That’s the situation,” Klopp said, per the Telegraph. “But the specific point doesn’t change – we will do something but it has to be the right one. We will see.”

Liverpool look at Sander Berge transfer

It’s fairly obvious how people would react to this. Liverpool signing a midfielder out of the Championship isn’t exactly the dream many fans had.

But Liverpool do have a long-standing interest in Berge. He was at Genk back in 2019 and their sporting director outright admitted that the Reds had been in touch, per Goal.

We were in favour of the move back then, too. Berge has the skillset that Liverpool need right now – a physical midfield presence who is capable of moving the ball through defensive lines. It’s exactly what they wanted against Manchester United, for instance, and what they sorely lack when Thiago is out of the side.

£35m would be very steep – probably too much – but this wouldn’t be a panic signing from Liverpool. Berge is a player they’ve liked for a long time and one they might finally justify.
