One defeat to Real Madrid in May appears to have put Liverpool’s season in jeopardy. The Reds have no easy way out.
It was widely reported earlier in the year that Liverpool wanted Aurélien Tchouaméni. Unfortunately, it would never be easy as Real Madrid wanted the player, too.
Foot Mercato were one of those reporting that Liverpool were chasing the Frenchman. They – along with others – claimed that the Reds were in pole position, even with Real’s interest. And then the Champions League final happened.
Marca wrote shortly after that final that Liverpool had dropped out as it was ‘clear’ that Tchouaméni wanted to join Real. Thus it’s very easy to believe that the Reds lost their best chance of convincing the player when they lost that final.
Win and Liverpool were on top of the world, looking like the team to join. The defeat simply made Real look like an overwhelmingly great prospect for Tchouaméni and the Reds didn’t have much of a chance.
And that has really put this season in jeopardy.
Liverpool’s season in jeopardy
Real went on to sign Tchouaméni for £85m and Liverpool were left looking for alternatives to boost their midfield. Only, it appears there aren’t any as we’re coming up to the end of the window with zero midfield signings.

Jurgen Klopp always talks about finding the right player, and that’s the line in recent days, too. Tchouaméni was that but his transfer to Real leaves Liverpool with nothing. And that’s looking quite bad.
Because the midfield was awful against Manchester United and Liverpool need a new player in there. Tchouaméni would have been great and it feels as though missing out on him has left the squad sorely lacking this season.
Thus if Liverpool had won that final and used it as ammunition to sign the player, things would look spectacular right now. Instead, the Reds badly need an alternative they can’t find.
