Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Naby Keita won’t train for Liverpool today after picking up yet another injury.
Keita missed last night’s loss against Manchester United with a knock. And speaking in his post-match press conference via LFCTV last night, Klopp said the Liverpool player won’t be training on Tuesday.
“We need further assessment, but it doesn’t look like tomorrow he’s in training. But we need further assessment, we’ll know more tomorrow,” said the manager.
More bad news to go with what’s turning out to be a hugely worrying start to the season for Keita and Liverpool.
More bad news for Liverpool
Yesterday was billed as a big moment for Keita’s Liverpool future. The 27-year-old is reportedly unhappy with his playing time for The Reds. It’s been claimed that he could still look for a way out of the club this summer.
He’s supposedly keen to see more minutes on the pitch for Liverpool, starting with the United game on Monday night.
In the end, Keita wasn’t even available for selection. A quite familiar theme for the Guinea captain at Anfield.
Regardless of what that means for his immediate and longer-term future at Liverpool, Klopp is now missing yet another midfielder.
In an area of the pitch where supporters have been calling for reinforcements already, that could force Liverpool’s hand.
With the greatest of respect to the three of them, Liverpool’s midfield last night was not good enough.
Of course they wouldn’t be starting together if everyone were fit, and players will return for Liverpool over the coming weeks. But these injury issues are long-standing and recurrent. There’s every chance we’ll see that same midfield several times more before the season’s out.
Whether or not Klopp decides he has to dip into the market may depend on the length of Keita’s injury lay-off. But given his history, that will simply precede another lay-off. Liverpool have got to do something, it’s getting a little desperate.
