Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards has claimed that he enjoyed playing at Anfield against Liverpool yesterday.
Speaking to cpfc.co.uk, the American defender was asked where the atmosphere on Monday night ranked in his career.
“Pretty high up if not number one, the fans were on the whole night long for both sides,” said the 22-year-old. “Especially once they got the equaliser I feel like they ramped it up a bit so it was definitely a hard game to come into, but I feel like it wasn’t too big for me.”
Richards, who was signed from Bayern Munich for £11m, came on for the final 10 minutes as Liverpool chased a late winner. Having seen a tumultuous game play out before them, the crowd did their best to get the players going. In the end though it wasn’t to be, as the spoils were shared.
Anfield rises up, but not to be last night
In a way it’s difficult to find major fault in Liverpool’s performance last night. From the crowd to the players on the pitch, everyone looked up for it.
Liverpool came flying out the blocks and the Anfield crowd responded to the intensity. Even after Palace opened the scoring, the stadium still seemed to be full of energy.
After Darwin Nunez was given his marching orders, and Luis Diaz fired in an incredible goal, the crowd were at fever pitch.
Unfortunately Jurgen Klopp’s team couldn’t find that extra little bit of quality at the end. Had Fabio Carvalho or Mohamed Salah scored with either of their late efforts, the roof would have come off.
Frustrating for Liverpool in many respects. But their ability to avoid defeat despite some setbacks further underlined their brilliant record at home.
Not since Fulham came away with a win in March 2021 have Liverpool lost in their own stadium. The last time they lost with fans in the ground was 23rd April 2017.
That’s a pretty remarkable record. It has looked under threat recently as Liverpool have fallen behind in each of their last six Premier League games, three times at Anfield.
But their tendency to fight back shows that they won’t give up in-front of their own supporters. Hopefully next time out against Bournemouth they can reward their fans with three much-needed points.
