Ian Wright says one thing about Darwin Nunez’s red card surprised him more than anything. Liverpool drew with Crystal Palace as a result.
Liverpool drew 2-2 on Monday evening in what turned into a very strange game. They fell behind to a first-half Wilfried Zaha goal – and a fine one at that – before the second half brought chaos.
As the Reds struggled to find a goal, Darwin Nunez received a red card for a headbutt. It was a proper one, too – there was no doubting his intentions.
It was a massive surprise, too. Liverpool don’t typically see red cards and they’ve had the fewest in the Premier League since Jurgen Klopp took over. That, at the end of the day, is the strange thing here.
Ian Wright pointed it out after the game for Premier League Productions. He can’t remember a Liverpool player doing something like this.
“I was surprised simply because that’s not something that Liverpool are about,” said Wright. “They’re not about reacting and doing that – it’s something he’s got to learn quickly. He’s obviously frustrated with the way it went.”
Later in the show, Wright pointed out that players at ‘massive’ clubs need to control their temperament more than most. It’s something Nunez must learn.

Well, he’s right. We can’t remember the last time something like this happened – it’s incredibly rare at Anfield and at top clubs. Nunez really can’t afford to let that happen again. Ever.
Because Liverpool will quickly feel the consequences of this one. Nunez was in a wonderful position to take the game to Manchester United next week and we were already looking forward to that one.
Now he’s set to spend the next three games – at least – sitting in the stands. This one could end up really hurting.
