Jurgen Klopp says Roberto Firmino ‘might’ return against Manchester United next week. Liverpool desperately need the Brazilian.
Liverpool drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace on Monday evening – another two dropped points. That’s now four gone after the first two games and the Premier League title race already looks tough.
Liverpool desperately need to get their season on track and fortunately, the best possible opponent is up next – Manchester United. If the Reds thought their season was off to a bad start, their old rivals are there to remind them of what ‘bad’ really looks like.
Seriously, though, United are the ideal opponent. Not only are they in horrid form but a win at Old Trafford instantly transforms the mood for Liverpool. No one will focus on the four dropped points if they put United to the sword.
One problem, however, is that Darwin Nunez won’t play. His red card against Palace will rule him out of at least the next three games and this is a fixture in which he could have made a big difference.
What makes things even worse is that Roberto Firmino – who would play instead of Nunez – isn’t guaranteed to be back. Jurgen Klopp told Sky Sports that he ‘might be ready’ to face United but isn’t sure yet.
Roberto Firmino might return
Liverpool really need Firmino to return to training this week. The encouraging thing is that he was on the bench against Palace, even if he didn’t get on. That suggests the injury isn’t too bad.
But Klopp still isn’t ready to commit to Firmino next Monday. It may be that the boss needs a new plan, presumably with Luis Diaz or Mohamed Salah up top at Old Trafford. It’s far from ideal, however.
Klopp might need to be a little inventive, then – when he’s not praying for Firmino’s fitness.
