Jurgen Klopp still can’t get over the ‘crazy’ reaction to Darwin Nunez in pre-season. The Liverpool striker got people talking.
Few people are questioning Darwin Nunez right now – not after his start to life with Liverpool. His competitive debut saw him come off the bench against Manchester City to win and penalty and score in a 3-1 win.
Game no.2 went similarly. Nunez entered the match as a second-half substitute against Fulham and both scored and assisted in a 2-2 draw. Liverpool would have nothing this season if not for Nunez.
Though, you don’t have to go back very far at all to find a period where people questioned him. That’s a strange thing to consider after two games but Nunez genuinely had critics after 20 minutes of pre-season action.
It’s something that Jurgen Klopp still can’t understand.
“Five weeks ago, when we started pre-season and he had his first game and it didn’t look great from the outside world,” he told Sky Sports. “Not for [Liverpool], but it’s crazy how quick we judge people… wow!
“Imagine if somebody did that to us and said, ‘First day of work, it didn’t work out. Go home, we never want to see you again! And you don’t get a second chance by the way’ – we would have all been long gone! No chance.
“Everybody can now see, ‘Ah he’s a proper striker’ – so good for us and good for him.”
The reaction to Darwin Nunez in pre-season
You’d think by now that people would realise how little pre-season matters. Especially for a 23-year-old who has just moved to a new team, in a new country, and who is playing his first 20 minutes. In a friendly, no less.

We can’t imagine that Klopp and co. ever gave things a second thought. They knew the player they bought and knew that it might just take more than a friendly or two for Nunez to find his feet.
Now he has – funnily enough, at a far quicker rate than most players do. Everything looks incredibly bright and Nunez already looks like a player to build your attack around.
And that’s something we could see very soon.
