Paul Merson believes every Liverpool fan is worried about Man City taking a four-point lead int he Premier League this evening. The Reds will host Crystal Palace at Anfield.
Liverpool failed to start their Premier League campaign with a bang last week. They dropped two points away at Fulham – points that could make a massive difference come May.
After all, Manchester City beat them to the title by a single point last season. That one slip-up against a newly-promoted side could be one they regret, such are the margins right now.
But things could get worse, of course. Liverpool host Crystal Palace tonight and can’t afford another slip. Pundit Paul Merson feels ‘every Liverpool fan’ would view Man City as overwhelming favourites with a four-point lead.
“If Liverpool draw this game, they could be four points behind City,” he told Sportskeeda. “If Man City got a head start of four points on Liverpool at the start of the season, who would your favorite be to win the title?
“Every Liverpool fan would admit it’d be Manchester City. Points at the start win you the Premier League, and this is a massive game for Liverpool.”
Liverpool must cut Man City lead
He’s absolutely right, of course. A four-point headstart is an awful thing to hand Man City, given how few points they drop. They’d unquestionably be massive favourites for the title just two games in.
But it’s not an unassailable lead. In fact, Liverpool fell over four points behind City last season but were able to draw them back in and cut the lead to one. The Reds just couldn’t quite overcome it all.
So while it would be a blow to drop points tonight, it wouldn’t be the end of anything. City would come out as big favourites but Liverpool would still fancy their chances. There’s a long way to go – the Reds just don’t want to set themselves too big of a task.
